Gunmen set ablaze police station, LG secretariat in Anambra

Gunmen in their numbers have reportedly set ablaze the Neni Police station in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra state.

They also attacked Neni the local government headquarters.

The hoodlums numbering about 30 and armed to the teeth during their raids torched buildings within the local government council at Neni.

It was gathered that the gunmen stormed the town between 3am and 4am yesterday.

They were said to be shouting, “DPO must go. He has overstayed. He has stayed in Anaocha for over 15 years.”

A source said the hoodlums also whisked away some policemen including female police personnel on duty at the police station.

*Police deny whisking of personnel

Meanwhile, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident.

He said although the hoodlums attacked the police station with IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), they neither took away any arms nor whisked away any police personnel.

He said the hoodlums were successfully repelled by the superior firepower of the police operatives who engaged them and forced them to flee.

He added that the police operations were still ongoing in the area as of the time he was reacting to the development.

Ikenga promised to communicate further developments on the incident later.
