Join forces with Obi for 2027, Aisha Yesufu urges opposition

Prominent activist and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart Aisha Yesufu has called on opposition parties and independent political actors to unite behind Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election.
She stated that a common presidential ticket offers the best chance of defeating incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a post on X, Yesufu, on Wednesday, contended that the opposition’s challenge in 2023 was not a lack of votes but fragmentation.
“The math has never been the problem. The math has always favoured us. The problem is that we ran three campaigns where we needed to run one,” she wrote, adding that the next election “will be won by the side that learns to assemble itself.”
She described Obi as “the candidate with the strongest record on the ballot” and maintained that backing him would amount to a strategic alliance rather than the abandonment of individual party identities.
“Unifying under him is not surrender. It is strategy,” she said, stressing that parties could retain their structures and offices while supporting a single presidential candidate.
Yesufu also announced the creation of a coordination platform for opposition organisers, fundraisers and strategists, urging them to “bring your party” and “bring your network” as part of a broader effort to forge a united front for the 2027 polls.
