Nigeria to compete at 2026 Flag Football W’Cup

 

Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA), has accepted to feature a team at the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

NAFA’s President, Babajide Akeredolu, confirmed that the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) extended the invitation to Nigeria as Africa representative at the global event which holds in Düsseldorf, Germany, from August 13 to 16, 2026.

He described the opportunity as a historic step in the growth of flag football within Nigeria and a milestone for the continent, urging Nigerians to celebrate the invitation.

Akeredolu said the teams would proudly showcase Nigeria’s talent, spirit, and resilience on the international stage during the competition.

“Today, IFAF, in partnership with the NFL and the City of Düsseldorf, officially named Düsseldorf as host for the 2026 Flag Football Championships.

“We’re proud to confirm Nigeria will field both men’s and women’s teams, competing against the world’s best in flag football,” he said.

He added that the tournament marks a defining moment for the sport, its players, and Nigeria’s sporting image globally.

“As the spotlight shines on Düsseldorf next year, our teams will compete with passion, representing Nigeria with pride and resilience,” Akeredolu noted.

He extended his appreciation to the Minister for Youth Development and Chairman of the Flag Football Development Board, Olawande Ayodele.

Akeredolu also thanked Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, and Chief Bukola Olopade, Director-General, for their steadfast support.

He recognised their contributions as essential to the advancement of NAFA’s vision and the sport’s national presence.

The NAFA President further acknowledged support from the NFL Africa, NFL Flag, and Browns Nigeria franchises.

He said their strategic partnership has significantly supported the implementation and success of flag football programmes across Nigeria.
