Protesters block Benin-Sapele road, urge FG to fix failed highway

By Oluwayemi Davidson, Warri
Scores of protesters blocked the Benin-Sapele road yesterday morning, urging the Federal Government to fix the failed portions of the highway without further delay.

The protesters, mostly youths, carried assorted placards just as they sang solidarity songs as they showed their grievances over the deplorable condition of the road.

The blockade resulted in severe traffic gridlock, particularly around the entrance and exit points to Sapele metropolis, off the highway. In the process, many commuters were stranded for hours.

Also, the socio-economic activities along the corridor were crippled as the protesters, who claimed to ply the road on a regular basis, vowed to remain on the road until the authorities show commitment to rehabilitate the dilapidated portion.

All efforts to reach the Federal Director of Highways in charge of the area were futile.
