Augusta attack: Gunmen kill two FRSC officials in Anambra

Unknown gunmen on Sunday killed two officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra State sector command.

Three other persons were said to be seriously injured during the attack.

The incident occurred at Umuezedibia junction in Ifite, along Igboukwu-Ezinifite-Uga road in Aguata local government area of Anambra state.

The officers were said to be on duty when the incident happened.

Residents and motorists within the area were said to have scampered for safety following gunshots by the gunmen.

The sad incident took place barely 24 hours after one day Peace meeting organized by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo with all the traditional rulers and clergies at the Women Development Centre in Awka the state capital.

Soludo and others at the meeting attended by core stakeholders and various groups including market leaders, town union executives, youth groups, transporters, extended the olive branch to all agitators, criminal elements and with an appeal to them to sheathe their swords and embrace peace.

The governor promised to work out viable programs including the establishment of the Peace and Reconciliation Commission, Security Trust Fund, and also charged communities to review activities of all vigilante groups across the 21 local government areas aimed at strengthening them and stemming the tide of violent killings and destruction of properties by hoodlums on the state.

The State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Irelewuyi Adeoye when contacted on phone confirmed the incident but said a team rescue deployed to the scene was yet to furnish him with details of the attack.

A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Operations in the state, Mr. Aderemi Adeoye also confirmed the attack.

He disclosed that two officers of the FRSC were killed and one rescued alive with serious bullet wounds.

Both the dead and injured were taken to a nearby hospital in the area.

Recall that there has been an upsurge of violent attacks in parts of Anambra in recent times.

The Nnewi South Local Government Area was attacked on March 31 while three local police divisions under renovation in the same council area were attacked on April 1.
