Private School Owners May Charge Fees

"School owners do not run a charity," says Nwajiuba

The Minister for State on Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has said that school owners can charge school fees for the SS3 students who are in school only for their exams.

Responding to a question whether school owners are entitled to fees for such a short period, he says that private school owners are running a business, not a charity.

Talking about public schools, he says that most public schools are free even though they vary across states.

“But when you go into a contractual relationship with a school owner, a school owner is a passionate person but is also a business person. He or she is not running a charity organisation, they may be charitable in its approach, but it’s not charity.

“So, it’s important that you appreciate that a private school is entitled to charge fees for the work they do. The person that runs a school may be passionate about education but will still charge fees,” he added.
