Edo 2024: 9 PDP aspirants accuse NWC of holding fraudulent congresses

Nine aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have accused the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) of holding fraudulent ward congresses to pick the flagbearer for the 2024 Edo governorship election.

ThisNigeria reported that some aspirants, in a letter dated February 3rd, had complained to the PDP NWC about the illegitimacy of the list of monitoring officers for the congresses.

However, in a video made on Sunday, February 4th, the aspirants, who were spoken for by Anslem Ojezua, lamented that they had no access to a 5-man panel headed by Enugu governor, Peter Mbah.

Ojezua noted that 9 of them were not able to reach Mbah as of the time of making the video.

“Between Friday and now, we have seen three different list of the ad-hoc committee for the congresses. The first one that had Oyo Governor, Seyi Makinde, was the legitimate list because we were reliably informed that the NWC had not convened again since the first list was approved,” he said.

Ojezua stated further that the aspirants had reached out to Governor Makinde, who declined to chair the committee, about their observations and requested for a level-playing field.

He noted that they had agreed that the electoral officers for the congresses would be PDP members from outside of Edo State.

“What we found out was that the other lists flying about had prominient members of the Edo State Government to be handling such a sensitive process. What was worse is that the committee had not arrived in Benin.

“After we reached out to governor Makinde, we were told that he had declined to head the committee and that governor Mbah is now the chairman.

“Mbah did not arrive in Benin until this afternoon and up till now, no one has reached out to us for how we would meet. We are just hearing rumours,” he said.
