Emefiele: Nigerians react to DSS controversial tweets

Nigerians have reacted to a recent tweet made by the official handle of the Department of State Services, DSS berating lawyers to embattled former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Recall that a court in Abuja had ordered for the immediate release of Emefiele over the failure of DSS to charge him to court.

However, following the refusal of the Secret Service to honour the court order, no fewer than 60 lawyers approached a High court in the federal Capital Territory to begin committal proceedings against the DSS.

According to the lawyers, the suit was hinged on what they described as violation of multiple judgments and orders of court directing the agency to release the former CBN governor.

The lawyers, led by Mr Maxwell Opara and Mr Ahmed Tijani, prayed the court to commit the DSS to prison unless the department cleared itself of the contempt.

The lawyers argued that by the judgments and orders of Justice M. A. Hassan, Justice Hamza Muazu and Justice Bello Kawu, the DSS Director -General ought to have released Emefiele from detention.

However, describing Mr Opara and other lawyers defending Emefiele in a tweet, the DSS official handle wrote. “Charge and bail, overzealous uninformed IPOB/ESN lawyer Maxwell Okpara mobilises other like minded lawyers against DGSS. Futile Efforts. Well, Nigerians, beware! This is in bad faith. Transferred aggression.’

“A Biafran Republic agitator and Outlawed IPOB counsel defending the suspended CBN Governor. Is IPOB defending one of theirs???? What a contradiction…..hmmm…what’s the connection? Is someone telling us something? May Maxwell be properly educated on points of law, please,” It added.

The tweet had drawn several reactions from Many Nigerians who believe that the conduct of the DSS was irresponsible.

Reacting to the development in a tweet, Innocent Onyebuchi Idemili wondered why the official Twitter handle of a government agency was commenting on a matter still in court.

“Is this the handle of a government agency commenting on a matter already in court? Hhhhhmmm,” Mr Idemili wrote.

On his part, a Twitter user identified as Rydr

wrote “The fact that this tweet is still up 6 hours later is enough reason to give up on this contraption called Nigeria. These guys are sick.”

Expressing shock over the tweet, Irunnia said that she thought the tweet was photoshopped or from a parody account

“I saw this and i thought it was photoshopped or from a parody account. Look at what they’re tweeting from their official account. The state of this country mehn,” she wrote.

Recall that Emefiele, who has been on the radar of the DSS since 2022 over alleged terrorism financing, was arrested by the secret service in June
