By Cajetan Mmuta
Two gunmen have been shot dead by security operatives in Umunze in Orumba South local government area of Anambra state.

The gunmen were killed during an exchange of gunfire as they were enforcing the Sit-At-Home directive on residents of the area.

Similarly, soldiers and unknown gunmen on Monday engaged in a fierce battle at the 33 Housing Estate end of the commercial town of Onitsha in the state.

However, details of the clash between the soldiers and the gunmen who were suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), were sketchy at the time of this report.

Many people were feared to have sustained serious gunshot injuries during the clash.

Residents of Awka the state capital and adjoining towns of Nnewi Auto Market, Nkpor, Onitsha, Obosi, Building Materials Market Ogidi, Eke Awka, and other major markets in Anambra state failed to come out for normal business activities.

Filling stations and commercial banks did not open for business while few shops and business centres opened for business.

Motor parks and other commercial activities were at a low ebb even as ministries and parastatals, as well as other government offices, failed to open over the fear of the unknown.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Ikenga Tochukwu when contacted on the killing of the two hoodlums confirmed the incident.

He said, “The Anambra State Command Operatives on crime prevention patrol in the early hours of today 16/5/2022 along Umunze, road, Orumba South LGA, engage armed bearing gunmen allegedly enforcing sit – at – home in Anambra State.

“The Operatives neutralize two of the miscreants and recover a white Toyota Hiace bus with no registration number.

“Further details show that these miscreants were obstructing the movement of innocent road users going for their businesses.”

“Meanwhile, the Command operatives have intensified patrol within the state and the situation is being monitored,” he stated.
