By Ben Adoga, Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday described the newly completed China-assisted ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja as a lasting symbol of regional solidarity, diplomacy, and shared prosperity for West Africa.

Speaking during the official handover ceremony in Abuja, Wike said the project represented far more than a physical structure, stressing that it embodied “a vision of partnership, unity, and the collective resolve of West Africa to build enduring institutions that will shape its future.”
Represented by the Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, Wike praised the People’s Republic of China for its support, describing the project as a major contribution to regional integration and international cooperation.

“This magnificent edifice is not just about concrete, steel, and glass. It is a bold statement that cooperation still matters and that diplomacy can deliver tangible and meaningful outcomes,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed Abuja’s strategic status as Nigeria’s diplomatic capital, noting that hosting the ECOWAS headquarters further strengthens the city’s role as a hub for dialogue, regional cooperation, and African development.

According to him, the FCT Administration played a critical role in ensuring the project’s successful completion by providing approvals, coordinating security, and providing infrastructure support.

“Great institutions deserve worthy homes,” Wike stated, adding that ECOWAS remains one of the strongest expressions of West Africa’s common identity and aspirations.

He urged member states to sustain collaboration and commitment toward stronger regional institutions and deeper integration.
