Wike: Tinubu faces easier 2027 election as opposition weakens

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has predicted an easier political contest for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, saying the opposition has been significantly weakened ahead of the poll.
Wike made the assessment on Tuesday while inspecting areas affected by flooding in Maitama, Abuja, where he also spoke on the political landscape ahead of the next general election.
According to the minister, the political circumstances confronting Tinubu in 2027 would be considerably more favourable than those of the 2023 presidential election.
“2027 elections will be the easiest one for the President compared to 2023,” Wike said.
He attributed his optimism to what he described as the declining strength and cohesion of opposition parties, arguing that the President would face a less formidable challenge at the next presidential poll.
“This time around, the opposition has been crippled, homeless, no feather,” the minister added.
Wike’s comments come amid fresh political realignments and intense manoeuvring among political parties as politicians begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
The minister, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party despite his appointment by Tinubu and his continued support for the President’s administration, has repeatedly criticised the opposition’s approach to national politics while defending the President on several issues.
Speaking on the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, Wike also suggested that the outcome could have been different if the Federal Government had chosen to interfere in the process.
He said, “If the President had wanted to win the Osun State election at all costs, I would have been there and we would have won it, and there’s nothing the governor can do.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, the winner of the Osun governorship election.
Wike’s latest assessment is likely to fuel debate within the PDP and other opposition circles, particularly over the party’s internal divisions, political alliances and ability to mount a credible challenge to Tinubu in 2027.
His remarks also come at a time when opposition figures are intensifying efforts to build broader political coalitions ahead of the presidential election, with the configuration of alliances expected to play a major role in determining the strength of the challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
