Jigawa man sets brother ablaze, another kills over ₦500

Two people have died in separate violent incidents in Jigawa State, including a man allegedly killed after being stabbed during a dispute over a ₦500 balance.
The Jigawa State Police Command said it arrested two suspects in connection with the incidents, which occurred in Gwaram and Dutse Local Government Areas of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Dutse on Wednesday.
Adam said the first incident occurred around 11:30pm on September 29 in Nassarawa village, Gwaram LGA, where 27-year-old Abbas Ibrahim allegedly entered the residence of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, 25, by jumping over the fence.
According to the police, Ibrahim, who claimed to be of unsound mind, allegedly poured petrol inside his brother’s room and set it ablaze.
Basiru and his wife sustained serious burns in the incident and were taken by relatives to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment.
The PPRO said Basiru later died from his injuries while receiving treatment.
Following the incident, police operatives launched an investigation and arrested Ibrahim in Sara town, Gwaram LGA.
Adam said the case was being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse and that the suspect had been arraigned in court.
In the second incident, a 20-year-old man, Lawisi Safiyanu, was arrested for allegedly stabbing 25-year-old Muhammad Abba during an argument over a ₦500 outstanding payment.
The incident occurred in Dutse LGA on October 1 after Abba allegedly bought a mobile phone from Safiyanu for ₦1,500, paid ₦1,000 and owed the remaining ₦500.
The disagreement over the balance reportedly escalated before Safiyanu allegedly used a knife to stab Abba.
Abba was rushed to the Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital in Dutse, where he later died while receiving treatment.
The police said the suspect was arrested and the knife allegedly used in the attack was recovered.
Adam said investigation into the case had been completed and the suspect charged to court, adding that he would face the full weight of the law.
The command’s Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
He also advised residents to report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police and other security agencies promptly.
The command said it remained committed to preventing criminal activities and ensuring that those responsible for violent offences were brought to justice.
