The Lagos State House of Assembly has just passed an amendment of the 2015 Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission Bill into law.
The passage of this bill into law comes on the heel of the full financial autonomy that was granted to legislative houses in the country on the 22nd of May, 2020 under Section 121 (3) of the fourth alteration of the 1999 constitution.
And this amended Legislative Service Commission bill is aimed at giving full legal and administrative impetus to the House of Assembly’s autonomy.
One of the amendments under this new bill is that the chairman and members of the House of Assembly Service Commission are entitled to a five-year term in office, and are eligible for a second term of five years.
The amendment also makes provision for the creation of five deputy clerk positions, under the categories of Legislative Matters, Legislative Drafting and Legal Services, Publication, Administration and Human Resources, and Finance and Accounts.
The House of Assembly is waiting on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to approve the bill.
