At least 37 miners have died following a carbon monoxide leak at an underground mining site in Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, when the miners, who had entered the pit to begin the day’s work, were reportedly overcome by the toxic gas suspected to have accumulated in the poorly ventilated tunnels.

Community sources said several of the victims were found unconscious underground by fellow miners and residents who later raised the alarm.

A resident, Safiyanu Haruna, described the development as devastating.

“It is heartbreaking that these young men who went to work to feed their families lost their lives like this,” he said.

More than 20 miners who survived the incident were rescued and rushed to a hospital in Wase town, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Security sources confirmed that Nigerian Army troops were immediately deployed to the area following the incident. The soldiers have since cordoned off the mining site to prevent further access and ensure residents’ safety.

A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the military presence has helped to secure the area and support ongoing response efforts.

“The soldiers arrived not long after the incident and sealed the place. They are making sure no one goes near the pit,” he said.

Local authorities and security agencies have also commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the gas leak.

Meanwhile, funeral prayers for the deceased miners were ongoing at press time, as families and residents mourn the victims.
