The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has said the decline in violent attacks linked to suspected Fulani herdsmen across Nigeria’s Southeast marks a significant shift in the region’s security environment, attributing the development to recent political changes following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the group described the change as “remarkable” after years of reported killings, displacement and destruction of farmlands in several communities across the region.
“It argued that the improvement has revived longstanding concerns among stakeholders over the drivers of insecurity during the period between 2015 and 2023.
“It is a miracle how the nefarious activities of suspected Fulani herdsmen have drastically declined in the Southeast,” the group stated, noting that many communities previously affected by attacks are beginning to experience relative calm.
The statement was jointly signed by Deputy President-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and National Spokesman Chief Thompson Ohia.
Ohanaeze further alleged that the pattern of violence witnessed during Buhari’s administration reinforced suspicions among residents that the activities of armed groups were politically motivated.
According to the statement, the recent drop in incidents has strengthened such views in some quarters.
“It is with a sense of vindication that we reaffirm our longstanding assertion that these militant groups were allegedly supported and funded during the Buhari administration to destabilise Southern Nigeria,” the statement added.
The group, however, acknowledged efforts by the current Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors of the Southeast states, saying recent collaboration has contributed to improved security conditions across affected communities.
“We recognise the collaborative efforts of the Federal Government and Southeast governors in addressing insecurity that claimed thousands of innocent lives,” the statement said, adding that the region had witnessed a gradual restoration of confidence in public safety.
Ohanaeze also noted that insecurity during Buhari’s tenure weakened trust between many Igbo citizens and the Federal Government, particularly under the All Progressives Congress (APC). It said the current improvements present an opportunity to rebuild confidence and strengthen national cohesion.
The group congratulated Tinubu on his 74th birthday, commending what it described as ongoing efforts to enhance security and infrastructure development in the Southeast.
“As we reflect on these developments, we must move forward with renewed hope and unity while continuing to advocate for the safety and rights of our people,” the statement added.
