The World Health Organisation (WHO) has appointed Nigeria’s Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu as its Assistant Director-General in charge of Health Emergency Intelligence.
Ihekweazu is the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
His appointment was announced in a statement by the organisation’s Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus on Tuesday.
“I am pleased to welcome Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu as an Assistant Director-General for Health Emergency Intelligence from November 1, 2021. He will lead the work on strengthening pandemic and epidemic intelligence globally, including heading the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence in Berlin.
”I am confident that Dr Ihekweazu’s appointment will help further accelerate WHO’s work in health emergencies. Please join me in welcoming him to WHO,” the statement read.

NCDC also shared the news on Wednesday in a statement on Facebook.
“Today, our Director-General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, will be inaugurated as the Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Hub for Epidemic Intelligence!
“The Hub will bring together experts worldwide to collaborate and create the tools and data needed for all countries to effectively prepare, detect and respond to pandemic and epidemic risks.
“We are very proud of this major stride and accomplishment towards achieving national and global health security,” it said.
