Building collapses in Port Harcourt, kills scavenger

By Emma Obe
A yet-to-be-identified scavenger was killed on Monday evening in Port when a building that was being demolished to give way to a flyover collapsed on him.

The incident occurred at Azikiwe Street by Ikokwu Junction, Mile 2 Diobu. The deceased believed to be Hausa had gone into the building unknown that it was going to collapse.

The Ministry of Works had repeatedly warned people to stay away from the site of the demolitions for security and safety reasons.

Last week, looters descended on the buildings as the residents and business owners in the area packed out. Many people lamented the loss of their household wares and merchandise.

The state government had ordered people out of the houses after paying compensation to the property owners.

But traders at the popular Ikokwu Spare parts market have complained that the government sent them parking without providing them with an alternative market.
