Physics, Biology inspired my stage name – Vector

Nigerian rapper and songwriter, Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, popularly known as Vector, reveals how he came across his stage Vector in an interview he had with his colleague, Olatunde Owoloye Olumoroti, popularly known as Jah-Bless, on his youtube session called ‘Jahbless Original Intelligence’.

During the conversation in which they were talking about ‘evolution’, Vector revealed the concept behind his name.

Vector said, ‘’There is no such thing as evolution as it’s been told to us evolution is only a natural phenomenon. That is, nobody has to tell you that a child will grow and become a man or a woman. Evolution is a natural happening by itself. Now, this takes me back to what we’re doing. This takes me back to when we are doing philosophy of developments, because evolution is development. And one of the arguments said, there is no such thing as development juxtaposed to another development, because development is simply development. So, there is no First World, Second World, Third World. It is by whose metrics? Because holistically, even the metrics within the holistically of the argument is still developing. So, development is development whether African or European development is development. There is none. So I guess evolution is evolution. I’m sure there are different, various understandings of what evolution is. But for me, evolution is evolution, I plan to become vector, but I couldn’t have planned to become Vector.’’

He also said that he woke up one morning and named himself Vector, adding that the name came when he was in the lecture room at college.

‘’I was in Saint Gregory’s College, and there were physics and biology lectures that day. It was physics first, with Mr. Eniola, and biology next, with Mr. Kanu.

And I remember that day that somebody was standing and they were fighting in the physics lab and the teacher said what’s going on there?

“My guy says I was at his back and the teacher said, correct yourself.

“I think somebody said I was behind him. I was like, yeah, I remember vividly because that was a funny moment I was having with my friend.

We were kidding about that, so we’re studying quantities, studying vector and scalar quantities, and I said hmmm vector quantity. For some funny reason, it just looked nice, so I saw what was grafting it on my notebook, and I wrote vector quantities. I said vectors are quantities, with both magnitude and direction. I said hmmm, magnitude, direction, so in my head, the first thing that came to my head was a gun, yes, the magnitude of a bullet moving and the direction of the bullets. In my head, I’m like an interesting vector. I don’t hear any other thing in the class, but I’m sure that I know the meaning of scalar quantities, so we did oscillations and pendulums and everything, but the only thing that stuck in my head was Vector, as magnitude and direction.’’

He continued with his conversation, saying the first lecture finished.

“And they moved to the next lecture, which is biology. The lecturer said today we are talking about vectors, vipers are vectors of venom.

‘’The lecturer came in and said, today we’re talking about vectors as in vipers are vectors of venom. And I was like a vector, the viper interesting in my mind. I now said. Ok, so vectors in biology are carriers. A snake is a carrier of poison, so I was like vector, magnitude, and direction, a carrier of the music poison.’’
