The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, declaring that all aspirants for National Assembly positions must test their popularity among party members rather than rely on perceived endorsements.
The party said its position aligns with the stance of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, former governor Kayode Fayemi, former governor Segun Oni, and former governor Adeniyi Adebayo, stressing that no aspirant has been officially endorsed ahead of the party’s primaries.
According to the party, while endorsements may occur within political circles, such actions do not override the provisions of the party’s constitution, which guarantees a level playing field for all contestants.
The position was contained in a statement signed on Monday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Segun Dipe, who emphasised the need for aspirants to adhere strictly to established guidelines.
Governor Oyebanji was quoted as maintaining neutrality, noting that he has not endorsed any aspirant for the National Assembly race.
Similarly, Fayemi dismissed claims of backing any particular candidate, urging aspirants to focus on mobilising support among party members.
Oni and Adebayo also emphasised the need for aspirants to respect the party’s democratic processes and avoid misrepresenting the position of party leaders for political advantage.
“Our leaders have spoken; let every aspirant go to the field and test his or her political weight,” the party stated, adding that where consensus fails, the option of direct primary remains available as provided by its constitution.
The APC maintained that adherence to transparent and fair procedures would strengthen party unity and credibility ahead of forthcoming elections.
