Gunmen invade police station, kill officers in Anambra

Gunmen on Thursday attacked a police station at Ajalli in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing some officers, reports say.

The police station was torched by the assailants who reportedly trapped some persons feared to be suspects in police custody in the building.

The police are, however, yet to confirm the number of casualties.

The unfortunate incident occurred barely three days after the murder of Dr. Chike Akunyili, husband of the late former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dora Akunyili and Minister of Information and Culture, others in the state.

Dr. Akunyili was killed by the gunmen on Tuesday alongside his driver and a police escort around the Nkpor junction in Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State.

A family source who confirmed the news on Wednesday said the deceased was returning from an event where he received a posthumous award of excellence for his late wife when he ran into the hoodlums at Nkpor, and was murdered in cold blood.
