By Nathaniel Zacchaeus, Abuja

The Southern Senators’ Forum has saluted the perseverance and resilience of Nigerians in the face of challenges as the nation marked its 25th year of democracy.

This was contained in a message addressed to Nigerians and signed by the forum’s chairman, Senator Tokunbo Abiru; the General Secretary, Senator Barinada Mpigi (Rivers, South-East) and Publicity Secretary, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South).

The statement read, “Democracy Day marks a significant milestone in our national history.

“It is a day to reflect on the journey we have undertaken as a people to uphold democratic values, to appreciate the progress we have made, and to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of freedom, justice, and equality for all citizens.

“On this auspicious occasion of Democracy Day 2024, we celebrate not just the establishment of democratic governance in our beloved country, but the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people, who have shown remarkable resilience, determination, and unity in the face of diverse challenges.

“As we commemorate this day, let us remember the sacrifices of those who fought tirelessly for the democracy we enjoy today.

“We remember in particular Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola GCFR, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential elections.

“Their vision and dedication laid the foundation for a Nigeria where every voice is heard, where governance is by the people and for the people, and where the rule of law prevails.

“In the spirit of democracy, it is imperative that we continue to strengthen our institutions, ensure transparency and accountability in governance, and foster an environment where the rights and freedoms of every Nigerian are respected and protected.

“Our democracy is only as strong as our collective will to uphold these values. The Southern Senators Forum remains committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to address the pressing issues facing our nation.

“From economic development and security to education and healthcare, we recognize the critical need for policies that promote inclusive growth and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians.

“We must also recognize the importance of national unity and cohesion. Our strength lies in our diversity, and it is through embracing our differences and working together that we can achieve the greatness that Nigeria is destined for.

“Let us reject divisive rhetoric and actions, and instead, champion the cause of unity, peace, and progress. As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us also look to the future with hope and determination. The challenges we face are significant, but they are not insurmountable.

“With collective effort, innovative thinking, and a steadfast commitment to democratic ideals, we can build a Nigeria that is prosperous, secure, and just for all.

“We call on every Nigerian to renew their commitment to the democratic process. Let us participate actively in governance and work together to ensure that the dividends of democracy are felt in every corner of our nation.”
