Gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu body arrives Lagos for burial

The remains of Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu, popularly known as “Omije Oju Mi,” were brought to Atan Cemetery in Yaba, Lagos, for burial on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

The arrival of her casket was a deeply emotional moment, drawing tears from family members and several high-profile colleagues.

The family of the late gospel singer had announced an updated schedule for her burial, following widespread shock and tributes after her unexpected passing.

The family had expressed that they believe her death was unusual and warranted thorough investigation before finalizing burial plans.

Citing concerns over the circumstances of her death, the family cancelled initial burial plans, choosing instead to focus on prayers, spiritual guidance, and investigations into her passing.

Family members stressed that rushing her burial wasn’t necessary, insisting that Akinnanu deserved a dignified and respectful sendoff.

The initial plans, which had multiple-day schedule and circulated by fellow gospel artiste, included a service of songs, a candlelight procession, and a tribute night on Tuesday, January 20, at the LTV 8 ground in Ikeja, Lagos.

A private interment service for the family and close allies was set for January 21

However, those plans were formally called off.

Following further discussions, a new date was agreed upon by the family for the burial of the gospel artist.

The burial arrangements are as follows: Service of Songs will hold at Ben Auto Event Center, located at Akowonjo Roundabout, beside FCMB Bank. This will be followed by Candlelight Night on Wednesday, 28th January 2026, at 4:00pm, and Artiste Night on the same day from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.

Interment will take place on Thursday, 29th January 2026, at 10:00am at Atan Cemetery, and will be strictly for family and close associates.
