Nigerian woman sets new Guinness World Record for longest wig

By Olusegun Olanrewaju

Nigerians have continued their winning streak by way of setting new records. The latest after Hilda Baci, who recently set a world record in a cook-a-thon is wigmaker Helen Williams who has now officially set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for creating the world’s longest handmade wig.

Reports say Williams has set the record by creating the wig measuring a whopping 351.28 meters (1,152 feet 5 inches) and the achievement has been recognised by the official Guinness World Records organisation.

The Nigerian, who embarked on the project on November 4, dedicated 11 days and spent over N2 million to craft the record-breaking wig. According to the information she shared concerning the creation, the attempt involved the use of 1,000 bundles of hair, 12 cans of hairspray, 35 tubes of hair glue, and 6,250 hair clips.

With a professional career spanning eight years, Williams brought her wealth of experience and courage to the challenge after producing 50 to 300 wigs per week and training hundreds of students who, in turn, collectively made thousands of wigs.

However, despite her extensive experience, after reflecting on the challenges she encountered during the process, Williams shared with the Guinness World Record (GWR), “Finding the materials to make the longest wig was not an easy task,”

After making this extensive wig, Williams said she had to lay it out in a straight line for accurate measurement. Various venues, including running tracks, reportedly proved insufficient due to the length of the wig.

Eventually, she said she had to choose the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, a long road connecting the cities of Lagos and Abeokuta, to showcase her creation.

Presently, the record-setting wig is now housed in Helen’s office, where she welcomes anyone interested to come and admire it.
