Police Act of 2004 to be replaced by The Nigeria Police Act

The Nigeria Police Act, 2020, which cancels out the Police Act of 2004, gives the Inspector General of Police the opportunity to serve only for four years.

The Nigeria Police Act received President Buhari’s approval on Thursday and it has been passed on to the clerk of the National Assembly.

The new bill is aimed at regularising the IGP’s term in office, which was varied under the Police Act of 2004. It would also support community policing and preserves the president’s sole power to appoint and terminate the Inspector General of Police.

Ibrahim Idris, Inspector General of Police, is skeptical of the new bill because it might foster politicking within the force, however, the bill is hoped to enforce a transparent and accountable Police force.
