As Christians prepare to start the Lenten season, some Nigerian Christian faithful have shared their levels of preparedness.
In separate interviews on Tuesday in Lagos, they said they were looking forward to renewing their commitments to God.
They said the period should be explored to pray fervently for the peace of the nation even as the national elections draw near.
Lent is a solemn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar commemorating the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, before beginning his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan.
Augustine Abuka, a student of the University of Ilorin said for her, the lenten would be a time for reflection.
Abuka said the period reminds him of the fact that one must constantly renew his ways before God as one will eventually return to the creator.
” My expectation in this sober period is to draw closer to God, to be in love with Jesus, the man who died for our sins,” he said.
Another Catholic faithful, Ambrose Ahula, said he would be taking more conscious steps toward improving his prayer life.
Ahula, a graphics designer and Chief Executive Officer, Maxi graphics, said Ash Wednesday reminds him that he shall return to dust and can die anytime.
” I hope to make the best of the Church teachings through this period including studying the scripture, fasting and prayer, this Lenten season,” he said.
Mrs. Victoria Ayeni, a teacher, said she would be concentrating on personal and national prayers, urging all Christian faithful to focus on the same.
According to her, this is the period the nation needs to pray more considering the security challenges and the forthcoming national elections.
” We need God to restore peace to this nation, there has been chaos all over the country, we need more prayers and this season of lent is the best time to do that,” she said.
A historian, Chukwulynda Chiamaka, who said she had not really prepared for the season said she would ensure she participate in the 41 days’ fasting.
“I am just going to try my best to flow and follow with the season.”
” The Ash Wednesday puts me in a conscious mood that after my life here, I will be needed somewhere else.
” I just want to be a better me in this holy season, am trying hard to model my life after Christ, I just want these thoughts to always direct and be a landmark for me,” she said.
Stella Nwachukwu, a model wants to engage in more good deeds in this time of holiness.

“Ash Wednesday reminds me of the purpose I was brought to earth. I hope to increase in faith and know myself better,” she said.
Emmanuella Iteye, a wig seller, said she wished to improve on her prayer life and to be changed in all ramifications of her life.
” This Lent, I want to be in deeper communion with God, also expect to be filled with the Holy Spirit this season,” he said.
