AAC senatorial candidate withdraws from Anambra central contest

The African Action Congress (AAC) has suffered a setback in its preparations for the 2027 general elections following the withdrawal of its Anambra Central Senatorial District candidate, Chioma Ifemeludike, from the race.

Ifemeludike, who also serves as the party’s Deputy National Chairperson (South-East), announced her decision in a formal letter addressed to the Acting National Chairperson of the AAC. The letter, which was made public on Friday, requested the removal of her name from all party processes relating to the Anambra Central senatorial contest.

The politician had emerged as the party’s consensus candidate during the AAC primary election conducted in May.

Explaining her decision, Ifemeludike said she reached the conclusion after careful reflection, insisting that her withdrawal was guided by her personal principles and commitment to justice, accountability and the protection of vulnerable members of society.

According to her, recent developments within the political space further strengthened her resolve to discontinue her senatorial ambition.

She specifically expressed concern over what she described as the role played by Doris Ogala Umezurike in matters relating to the case involving Baby Testimony and the child’s physically challenged mother.

Ifemeludike stated that, in her view, the handling of the matter prolonged the suffering of the child’s mother, subjected her to public embarrassment and raised questions about whether justice was adequately pursued for the child.

She said those concerns ultimately influenced her decision to step away from the contest and instead concentrate on advocacy efforts aimed at promoting justice, accountability and the protection of vulnerable persons.

The former senatorial aspirant also urged the party leadership to formally remove her name from every record and process connected to the Anambra Central Senatorial District candidature.

Despite ending her ambition, she reaffirmed her loyalty to the African Action Congress, thanking the party’s leadership and members for the confidence reposed in her throughout the nomination process.

She pledged to continue supporting the party’s programmes and ideals, expressing confidence in its vision while promising to remain actively involved in advancing its objectives ahead of future political engagements.
