The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Isiyaku Usman, for allegedly luring a seven-year-old girl into an uncompleted building, defiling her and stealing two mobile phones in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident with the two phones allegedly stolen from the girl, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib.
Habib disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the incident occurred on Sunday after the victim’s 37-year-old father, a resident of Kari village in Darazo, reported the matter to the police.
He said the girl was on her way to a neighbouring house with the two Android phones when Usman allegedly lured her into a nearby uncompleted building.
The PPRO stated, “On the same date at about 0800hrs, the victim was on her way to a neighbouring house with two Android phones of the same make, Techno A31, when one Isiyaku Usman ‘m’, 20 years old, of the same address, lured her into a nearby uncompleted building, robbed her of the phones and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.”
Following the complaint, Habib said police detectives immediately commenced investigation and arrested the suspect in possession of the stolen phones.
The victim and the suspect were subsequently taken to Darazo General Hospital for medical examination, while their statements were obtained by the police.
According to the PPRO, Usman voluntarily confessed to the offences and remained in police custody as investigation continued.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the alleged offence and directed that the case be transferred to the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.
Habib said the suspect would be charged to court after the completion of the investigation.
The commissioner reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence and urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant about the safety and movements of their children.
Aliyu assured members of the public that the command would pursue the case and ensure that justice was served.
