Gwarimpa midnight fire left six persons dead 

Properties, goods worth millions lost, as hoodlums took advantage of situation

Midnight fire at the popular Gwarimpa Tipper Garage at 3rd Avenue on Thursday left six persons dead as properties and goods worth millions of Naira were also consumed.

Hoodlums capitalized on the situation to cart away goods before the arrival of the Federal Fire Service around 2am.

According to one Mallam Abdullahi., the fire started from one of the shops, and suspected to be a spark from the refrigerator.

“The fire started from one of the shops closed to where my provisions shop, as we were try stop the fire, it spread to others before the fire service came, a lot have been consumed by the fire, even hoodlums who pretend to be helping, were looting our goods, they took advantage of the situation to vandalized the shops and carry out other nefarious activities before the firefighters arrived”.

Five bodies were recovered from the fire and taken to the morgue. One was burnt to ashes while those injured were rushed to the hospital.

“For over two hours, firefighters didn’t come to the scene. Six people had already been burnt to death before they arrived. Some of the shop owners usually sleep there. So, they were trapped in their shops.

“Many people have lost their sources of livelihood. Even private houses were burnt too. It was a sad situation. The corpses have been evacuated and the fire put out. It was caused by a spark in one of the shops.”
