A tailor, Sylvester Yahaya, on Thursday appeared in a Zuba Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing building materials worth N81,000.

The police charged Yahaya, who resides in Saburi 1 Gwagwa, Abuja, with joint act, housebreaking, and theft.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mr. Chinedu Ogada, told the court that the complainant, Adesemi Temitope of Dei- dei Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwagwa Police Station on June 20, 2021.

Ogada said that the defendant and one other, at large criminally broke into the complainant’s house at Saburi village and stole 2.5 mm wire, two rolls of 1.5 mm wire, four pieces of wall bracket, six cartons of tiles all valued at N81,000.

He said during the police investigation the defendant made a confessional statement but all efforts made to recover the stolen items failed.

The prosecutor said that the offense contravened the provisions of sections 79, 346, and 288 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The judge, Gambo Garba, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000, and a surety in like sum.

Garba adjourned the matter until Sept. 9 for a hearing.
