Oyo State Government on Wednesday organized a one-day in-house sensitization training on job ethics and security consciousness for 58 of its workers.
The Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Alhaji Siju Lawal, declared open the training held at the Simeon Adebo Staff Development Centre, State Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan.
In his address, Lawal said the training was meant to intimate the participants with existing rules and regulations that could guide them towards proper conduct expected of public and civil servants.
He said the training would also make the participants understand the nitty-gritty of the public service.
The commissioner added that participants would be sensitized on the available disciplinary measures that could be taken against recalcitrant officers who indulge in unethical practices.
He identified ethics as core values guiding the behavioral disposition of all workers, stressing that there would be productive and progressive civil service when workers imbibe the right attitude to work.
“Findings reveal that some officers in the lower and intermediate cadres feign ignorance of the provisions of the extant rules and regulations guiding the service.
“A few of them who are well averse of the laws, damn the consequences and wear togas of nonchalant and lackadaisical attitudes to commit crimes on the job.
“As we know, public/civil service is a key through which government business is transacted, also the image of state government is hinged on the type and quality of its civil service.
“For a virile and productive civil service, therefore, civil servants must comport themselves in accordance with the acceptable standard of operation, otherwise known as the ethics of the job,” the commissioner said.
Lawal urged the participants to have a change of attitude and to adhere strictly to the general order/rule and regulations guiding the civil service.
He warned that failure to abide by the ethics of the job might lead them to face strict disciplinary measures, including an unceremonious disengagement from their jobs.
He also called on supervising officers to be alive to their responsibilities and to nip in the bud any wrong attitude noticed among workers under their watch.

Two of the participants; Folashade Akintayo and Musiliu Ololade, commended the state government for prioritising the training and retraining of its workforce.
The duo expressed optimism that the training would brighten their knowledge and make them perform better on their duties.
