The Gombe state government has commended security operatives in the state for thwarting an attempt to breach the peace in the state capital on Friday.
Some thugs allegedly blocked the Gombe-Bauchi Federal highway just as Sen. Danjuma Goje, the senator representing Gombe Central, was coming into the state from the Lawanti Airport, Gombe state.
In a statement by the Gombe Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr. Julius Ishaya, which was made available to newsmen in Gombe, the government condemned the attempt to breach the peace in the state.
Ishaya said that the state had been witnessing relative peace and harmony, due largely to the determination and avowed commitment of Gov Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state.
“Therefore, the government would not stand by and watch desperate politicians unleash terror and violence on innocent citizens to the extent of getting people killed.
While sympathizing with families of the victims, the government commended the security agencies for ”their timely intervention in bringing the ugly situation under control,’’ the commissioner said.
Ishaya further stated that Gov Yahaya “as the Chief Security officer of the State, will not renege on his responsibilities and would, therefore, do everything necessary to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.’’
The commissioner assured that the perpetrators of the unfortunate act, “no matter how highly placed, would be brought to book.”
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Babaita Ishola confirmed that the senator was blocked on his way into the state, because those who blocked the road believed that the senator was coming to cause chaos, and if they didn’t block him, it would have been a smooth ride to his house.
“But, the police was able to escort him to his house and the situation now is calm’’, Ishola said.

Ishola stated that the command could not immediately confirm the number of vehicles that were damaged or those injured, “but information gathered said about one or two died, but I don’t know.’’
He called on the youths not to allow themselves to be used for any political motives, while reassuring residents of the command’s resolve to protect lives and property in the state.
