Atiku resigns from PDP, cites irreconcilable differences

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a personally signed resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku stated that his decision was compelled by the current trajectory of the party which, according to him, diverges from its foundational principles.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the former vice president wrote, noting that it was a “heavy heart” decision born out of “irreconcilable differences” that have emerged between him and the party’s current direction.

Atiku expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities granted to him by the PDP, reflecting on his years of service as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 under the party’s platform and his two-time emergence as its presidential candidate.

“Serving two full terms as vice president of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heart-breaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku said in the letter.

He concluded by wishing the party and its leadership well, while acknowledging the support and opportunities extended to him during his decades of active engagement with the PDP.

The letter, which was submitted to the ward chairman, bears an acknowledgment stamp dated July 14, 2025, and was signed by Hamman Adama Abubakar, indicating official receipt at the PDP’s grassroots unit in Adamawa State.
