ECOWAS MP decries political intolerance in Liberia

By Linus Aleke
The Head of Liberian Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr. has condemned in strong terms the unfortunate incidents of political intolerance in Liberia ahead of the October poll.

The Chairman, of the ECOWAS Parliament Committee on Political Affairs, Peace, Security and African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), noted that he was compelled to speak out against the tearing down of political flyers, regardless of party affiliation.

Senator Snowe Jr., in a statement, said, that disagreements should never lead to violence or hatred, for it is through collaboration that politicians and supporters can address the challenges facing their county and the nation.

He observed that in a true democracy, individuals have the right to express their political preferences freely, and opposing viewpoints are essential for a healthy political discourse.

Senator Snowe Jr. who represents Bomi County in the Liberian Parliament, said: “Fellow Citizens of Bomi County and Liberia; As we stand on the cusp of an important election on October 10, 2023, with just 29 days remaining, I feel compelled to address a troubling issue that has come to my attention – the tearing down of political flyers, regardless of party or candidate affiliation. As your Senator, I must strongly condemn these actions, which not only undermine the principles of democracy but also erode the values of unity, diversity, and peace that should define our nation. ”

Liberia, he said, is a mosaic of cultures, ideas, and beliefs, a place where diversity has long been their strength, adding that their ability to celebrate and respect these differences is what has enabled them to overcome challenges and build a brighter future together.

Unity in diversity, he noted, is not just a catchphrase; it’s a testament to the character of Liberia.

The Bomi County Senator, however, lamented that the recent incidents of tearing down political flyers serve as a stark reminder that citizens have work to do in upholding the ideals of democracy.

“Acts of vandalism and aggression against these expressions tarnish the very essence of democracy. Let us remember that peace is our shared goal, regardless of the political banner we stand under. Our democracy is stronger when we engage in respectful dialogue when we allow for open debate, and when we peacefully cast our votes to choose our leaders. As we approach this pivotal election, let us recommit ourselves to the principles that underpin our democracy – the peaceful transition of power, accountability, and the rule of law. Let us demonstrate to the world that Liberia can conduct a fair and peaceful election, one that truly reflects the will of the people,” he said.

While, appealing to all those who have engaged in tearing down political flyers, regardless of their affiliations, to reconsider their actions, Senator Snowe Jr. told citizens to choose unity over division, peace over conflict, and progress over stagnation.

Together, he said, Liberians can build a brighter future for Bomi County and the nation.
