Afriland confirms 10 dead from smoke inhalation during tower’s inferno

Afriland Properties Plc has confirmed that 10 people lost their lives in the fire incident that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos.

In a statement released over the weekend, Chukwunonso Okafor, Head of Brand, Marketing, and Corporate Communications at Afriland Properties, stated that the fire originated from the inverter room in the building’s basement before spreading rapidly due to the thick smoke and intense heat.

According to him, safety protocols were activated immediately, and the first responders arrived within 20 minutes.

He clarified that, contrary to some reports, the fire began around 1:20 pm, not 10 am, as widely reported.

Okafor explained that, although the building is equipped with fire alarms, smoke extractors, extinguishers, and two dedicated emergency staircases, the speed at which the smoke spread severely hindered evacuation efforts.

He noted that some occupants had to resort to jumping from windows in their struggle to reach safety.

On casualty figures, he said, “Sadly, we recorded 10 fatalities, including staff of United Capital Plc and the Federal Inland Revenue Service. The primary cause of death was smoke inhalation. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”

Okafor assured that Afriland is working with affected organisations to provide support for families of the deceased while also prioritising the welfare of its employees.

Measures include precautionary medical checks, grief counselling, and flexible work arrangements.

He further disclosed that Afriland Towers will remain closed until it undergoes a full structural, safety, and regulatory review.

“The building will undergo a comprehensive audit before anyone is asked to return. Staff welfare and confidence remain paramount,” he said.

Okafor confirmed that the building is insured and that the details are being reviewed pending the release of the official report.

He added that Afriland is undertaking a broad safety review of all facilities under its management in collaboration with regulators, insurers, and independent fire safety experts.

He reiterated the company’s commitment to staff and clients, stating, “This is a time of mourning and healing. The lessons learned will not only help prevent a recurrence but will also strengthen our safety protocols across all developments.”
