Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered a sweeping security reinforcement across Abuja, directing security agencies to intensify surveillance at all entry points and border communities.
To execute the directive, the FCT joint task force, Operation Sweep Squad, comprising the military, police, Department of State Services, and other agencies, has been deployed to strategic locations to clamp down on criminal activities.
Addressing the operatives on Tuesday, FCT Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, said the minister had provided full logistical support to ensure the operation’s success, including funds for fuelling, vehicle maintenance and allowances.
He noted that service chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police had also endorsed the operation, which will prioritise areas prone to kidnapping and banditry ahead of the festive season.
Dantawaye added that security agencies were working with relevant FCTA departments to curb street begging, saying criminals often disguise themselves as beggars. He said those arrested at black spots would be profiled while legal procedures for evacuation continue.
Meanwhile, the FCTA has dismissed reports that all government schools were ordered to shut down on November 28.
Lere Olayinka, Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications, described the claim as false, announcing the suspension of the Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, in place of the Secretary.
The Acting Head of Service, Mrs Nancy Sabanti Nathan, has also been directed to discipline the Director of School Services, Mrs Aishatu Sani Alhassan.
The administration urged parents and school authorities to ignore the rumour, insisting the approved academic calendar remains unchanged, and assuring residents of strengthened security through the resumed Operation Sweep and other initiatives.
