Alleged defamation: Court grants Dele Farotimi N50 million bail

Human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi has been granted a N50 million bail by the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The Nigerian police had earlier dragged Farotimi before an Ekiti State court over allegations of cybercrime.
Presiding over the court on Monday, Justice Babs O. Kuewumi granted Farotimi bail in the sum of N50 million, with a surety in like sum.
The court said the surety must own landed property while the matter was adjourned to January 29, 2025, for further proceedings.
The case, with suit number FHC/AD/CR/104/2024, was filed by the Inspector-General of Police, alleging cybercrime activities linked to Farotimi.
“Dele Farotimi was granted bail of N50 million naira surety in the like sum with someone with landed property. The case was adjourned to 29 January 2025,” Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, confirmed on his X handle on Monday.
Recall that the Nigerian police, last Friday, filed fresh charges against Farotimi, before the Federal High Court In Ado-Ekiti, over allegations of cybercrime.
The state police command had made the filing in a plot to frustrate the human rights lawyer’s bail application and keep him in remand.
Some activists led by Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the Take it Back Movement had declared Tuesday a day of protest to demand freedom for Farotimi.
