By Ben Ogbemudia
As Nigeria marks democracy day, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, Member representing Owan Federal Constituency at the National Assembly on Monday said even as we are largely in an illiberal democratic arrangement, it is a huge step away from military rule.

Ihonvbere who is the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services said Nigerians are faced on a daily basis a lot of challenges which are just too many.

“Covid is still there, insecurity is a huge wahala, corruption remains unabated, unemployment and lack of basic facilities continue to frustrate the average citizen.

“Local governance exists just in name and the leaders are never short of promises as they come under huge pressures in an economy of affection.

“We can only pull our resources and opportunities together to continue in the struggle to survive. We existed before political parties and opportunistic leaders.

“We need to look back at leadership structures, youth and women organizations, age grades, and other ways through which we maintained peace, security, harmony, progress, and unity. It is on that reconstituted and strengthened foundation that we can anchor contemporary structures, institutions, and engagements.

“We will continue to survive. Life should not be this uncertain, unsteady, painful, and tough. I appreciate your courage and determination against all odds. May God continue to remain with us all.”
