Promote other cities without attacking Lagos, Sanwo-Olu’s aide tackles Solomon Buchi

The Lagos State Government has hit back at content creator Solomon Buchi over his criticism of the city, defending its nightlife, tourism appeal and opportunities while accusing him of showing “bitterness” towards the state.

Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said Buchi could have promoted other Nigerian destinations without making what he described as disparaging remarks about Lagos.

Akosile made the remarks in a post on his X handle on Friday, responding to Buchi’s recent advice to foreign visitors to Nigeria to consider cities other than Lagos for a more authentic experience.

“Dear Solomon, you could have done a better job of marketing other parts of Nigeria without displaying your bitterness to Lagos,” Akosile said.

The governor’s aide also rejected Buchi’s negative assessment of Lagos’ nightlife and social scene, arguing that activities such as clubbing and the popularity of cosmetic procedures were among the attractions drawing visitors to the city.

“Those clubbing, BBL etc that you mentioned with derision are some of the reasons why Lagos nightlife is interesting and they’re in high demand by those who visit our beautiful city,” he said.

Akosile accused Buchi and other commentators of repeatedly making hostile remarks about Lagos, questioning what he described as the motivation behind their online criticism of the state.

“I wonder what you guys smoke before you set up your ring lights and cameras that makes you vomit diatribes,” he said.

He maintained that such criticism would not stop Lagos from growing, describing the state as a place where people could pursue their ambitions and realise their dreams.

“No matter your hateful rhetoric, Lagos will continue to get bigger, stronger and better. It is a city where dreams are realised. Ask several of your brothers from the other side,” Akosile said.

The governor’s aide further promoted Lagos as a destination for visitors during the festive period, saying the state would have several activities lined up for the December season.

“We’re expecting to visit your families and friends in Lagos this December. Plenty of activities await you,” he added.

Buchi had, in a video, advised foreign visitors, particularly Caucasians and Chinese tourists, not to make Lagos their primary destination if they wanted to experience what he considered a more authentic side of Nigeria.

He criticised the city’s fast-paced lifestyle and nightlife, arguing that visitors could find better cultural and social experiences in other parts of the country.

“The only thing you can get out of Lagos is begging, clubbing, fake life, and a den of adulterers and fornicators. There is nothing there apart from all the loudness and madness,” Buchi said.

He urged tourists to consider Ibadan, Uyo and Abuja, highlighting their food, scenery, atmosphere and cultural experiences.

“There are so many places in Nigeria that you can visit and have a good time. Go to Uyo, a very serene city. Go to Abuja, a very beautiful place. Even go to Ibadan, Oyo State. Good food, rural areas, rustic city vibe, beautiful,” he said.

Buchi also listed Calabar, Jos, Taraba, Kano, Yola and Bauchi among destinations he said foreigners should consider visiting.

While his comments were framed as a recommendation to explore other parts of Nigeria, the remarks about Lagos prompted the response from the state government, which insisted that the city remained an important destination for visitors and a centre of economic and social opportunities.
