Police officers have no right to search phones, says Lagos CP

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fayoade Adegoke, has said that police officers are not allowed to search the phones of any Nigerian citizen.
Speaking in a recent visit to Melody FM, Fayoade offered hope for improved police-citizen relations in the bustling metropolis.
“If you feel a policeman engaged in corruption or cheated you, kindly report the policeman to his DPO or Area Commander. But if you still feel cheated, please report to me directly. My phone number is open to all Lagosians.
“No police officer has the right to beat citizens. The people are the government’s employers; your taxes support us. Thus, we have to treat you with the appropriate decency.
“Also, no policeman has the right to search your phone. If a policeman suspects anything on your phone, he will take you to the station.
“We have a cyber department that is responsible for all that,” he said.
Fayoade’s message extends beyond phone searches, encompassing broader issues of police conduct.
