Nigeria abandons Vision 20:2020 for Agenda 2050

President Muhammadu Buhari has come to the realization that his administration would not be able to position Nigeria’s economy among the top 20 economies in the world and, as such, is making plans to prepare for Agenda 2050.

Vision 20:2020 was an initiative by Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian president, to foster economic growth through the effective utilisation of human and natural resources, and justifiable social development for all. However, the Vision 20:2020 has since been partially sidestepped by other economic growth plans, such as Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda and Muhammadu Buhari’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

While speaking at the inauguration of Agenda 2050, Buhari stated that the objective is, “…to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty within the next 10 years, particularly given the World Bank’s projection that Nigeria will become the world’s third most populous country by 2050 with over 400 million people.’’

Mr Atedo Peterside and Dr (Mrs) Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, are to jointly chair the National Steering Committee for the development of Successor Plans to Vision 20:2020 and ERGP which is to administer the framework for Agenda 2050.
