National Assembly backs Tantita Security Services amid Niger Delta contract controversy

The Joint Committee on the Niger Delta of Nigeria’s National Assembly has thrown its weight behind Tantita Security Services, reaffirming the company’s effectiveness in protecting the nation’s coastal communities.

The endorsement comes in the wake of calls from certain stakeholders in the Niger Delta to reduce or terminate Tantita’s contract, which critics have described as overly concentrated and financially burdensome for a single firm.

Lawmakers, however, dismissed these objections after a detailed briefing from Tantita, which showcased measurable achievements in reducing crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and pipeline sabotage across the region.

Sources suggest that the opposition may be politically and economically motivated, with some regional actors reportedly uncomfortable with the extensive resources under one company’s management. There are indications that these stakeholders are advocating for a restructuring that would split the contract, allocating portions to multiple entities.

The committee emphasized that performance, not political or economic considerations, should guide contractual decisions.

Since Tantita assumed responsibility for coastal security, the committee noted, incidents of oil theft and pipeline vandalism have declined significantly.

Committee members also highlighted the broader impact of Tantita’s operations. Improved security in oil-producing communities has helped stabilize the region, enabling smoother oil exploration and contributing to Nigeria’s ability to meet global production targets—benefiting national revenue and economic growth.

The lawmakers urged Tantita to maintain its current momentum, stressing that national assets and economic interests must remain protected from political maneuvering.

The development underscores the ongoing tension in the Niger Delta between effective resource management and competing political interests, particularly as election season approaches.
