Bayelsa State edged out traditional powerhouses Delta and Edo to emerge as overall champions of the inaugural Niger-Delta Sports Festival, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The week-long sporting event, sponsored by the Niger-Delta Development Commission (NDDC), saw Bayelsa accumulate 42 gold medals, narrowly surpassing Delta’s 41.
Bayelsa’s overall medal tally stood at 86, including 29 silver, and 15 bronze.
Delta State, finished second with 99 medals in total (41 gold, 26 silver, 32 bronze), while Edo placed third with 89 medals, comprising 23 gold, 35 silver, and 31 bronze.
The competition brought together athletes from the nine Niger-Delta states, showcasing impressive talent and competitiveness, with Bayelsa’s remarkable performance setting the bar for future editions.
