Civil society organizations under the aegis of Kano Civil Society Forum(KCSF) Saturday tasked Kano state governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to establish a judicial panel of inquiry to aid the process that would ensure the compensation of those who suffered various losses during the EndSARS protest staged in Kano.
The forum in a missive made available to journalists on Saturday evening said the demand to set up the judicial panel is being instituted and pursued by 190 civil society organizations operating across the state.
The letter signed by Ibrahim Waiya and Peter Hassan , President and Secretary General of the forum respectively , further urged governor Ganduje to mandate the panel to access the damages inflicted on public and private properties by the protesters.
The forum posited that the recommendations that would be presented to the state government by the panel will help pilot the state government in giving out its support to those who suffered losses during the #End SARS protest in the state.
KCSF said “Following up on the matter, the Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF) a key umbrella of about 190 different Civil Society and Community based Organizations operating in Kano state which seeks to achieve human rights protection and promotion of democracy and good governance
“As a platform for CSOs, we strongly believe in the process of upholding the rights of citizens, a practice which not only help in upholding the rule of law, but as well critically supports in strengthening public confidence and trust in democratic governance” KCSF said.
“We therefore urge His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano state, to constitute an all- inclusive judicial panel of inquiry, as a response mechanism with specific responsibility to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged SARS/ police brutality and abuse of power” KCSF stated.
The body though admitted that the losses and magnitude of the EndSARs protest staged in Kano could not be compared to those witnessed in other parts of the country, the forum urged the state government to set up the panel of inquiry to ensure victims are indentified and adequately compensated.
KCSF argued that Kano state is a pace setter on all national issues of public concern, saying the compensation of those who suffered losses from the EndSARS should not be an exception.
