The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has nominated three prominent indigenes as Mogajis as part of efforts to fill vacancies created in the traditional hierarchy following the death of a High Chief and other chiefs.
The nominees are the publisher of The Street Journal Newspaper, businessman and philanthropist, Wole Arisekola; Kabiru Ademola Makinde; and Charles Durosaro.
The nominations were made in consultation with the Olubadan-in-Council, according to a statement issued by the Administrative Secretary, Olubadan-in-Line Traditional Chiefs, Sanusi Akinkunmi, and made available to newsmen on Monday.
The development forms part of the succession process within the traditional institution of Ibadanland, where Mogajis, who traditionally head family compounds, constitute an important component of the established chieftaincy structure.
According to the statement, vacancies emerged in some lines of succession following the death of a High Chief and other chiefs, prompting the Olubadan and his council to commence moves to fill the affected positions.
The statement said, “Following the glorious exit to glory of a High Chief and some other Chiefs, some positions in the lines of succession have become vacant.
“In preparation for filling these vacancies, His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, in consultation with the Olubadan-in-Council, has nominated three Mogajis. They are Mogaji Kabiru Ademola Makinde, Mogaji Charles Durosaro, Mogaji Wole Arisekola.”
It added that the nomination for the remaining vacant position would be announced after the Olubadan makes a decision on it.
“The nomination for the remaining one vacant position shall be decided and announced in due course,” the statement added.
The administration also said arrangements for the formal installation of the newly nominated Mogajis would be communicated after further directives from the Olubadan.
“We await further directives from Kabiyesi regarding the date and arrangements for the official installation ceremony,” it stated.
The nominations highlight the continuing role of the Olubadan-in-Council in maintaining the traditional succession structure in Ibadanland.
The traditional system operates through a progression of chieftaincy ranks, with eligible chiefs advancing through established lines and grades as vacancies occur, eventually leading to the Olubadan throne.
The latest nominations are therefore expected to pave the way for the affected vacancies to be formally occupied and for the traditional succession structure in the affected lines to remain intact.
