The Federal Government has approved the extradition of a suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari to the United States over alleged fraud.
Recall that the US had requested Kyari’s extradition over his connection to an internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas popularly known as Hushpuppi.
US court officials had revealed that during interrogation, Hushpuppi had alleged he bribed Kyari to arrest and jail one of his rivals in Nigeria after a dispute over a $1.1 million scam on Qatari businesspeople.
Alleged bribery: Why Hushpuppi contacted me – Abba Kyari
Denying the allegation, Abba Kyari denied receiving money from Hushpuppi, adding that the latter had contacted him over some clothes he saw on his Instagram page.
Confirming the development through his media aid, Isa Gwandu, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami said that the process to extradite Kyari had commenced.
“After thorough studies and reviews of issues regarding the application and components thereof, processed the application and forwarded same to the relevant authorities for further necessary action.
“As you are aware extradition is a process that involves multifaceted components.
“The components are usually multi-territorial, international, local and judicial. Submission of request from the concerned party to the relevant authorities constitutes one of such components.
“The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice received the extradition request in respect of the officer in question,” Malami said.
