Rivers residents, traders ignore sit-at-home

By Emma Obe
The sit-at-home directive given by the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) for people to remember the millions of people that died since the Nigerian civil war of 1967 – 70, was largely ignored in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital.

But an early morning explosion at Mile Three market in the Diobu area of the city caused panic and apparently dissuaded traders and customers from going to the market.

Though no life was lost in that explosion suspected to have been caused by dynamite, one person was injured on the leg while a few other people were slightly injured.

Ignore IPOB’s sit-at-home order, Imo govt. tells residents

Schools were open while many offices carried on with normal businesses. Mr. Okorie Nweke, a generator mechanic in Eleme, said he had to come to work because the people of Rivers State said they were not part of Biafra.

He said though he did not like the manner in which IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu was ordering people around, the idea of having a special day set aside to honour fallen heroes during the war.
