Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa, has described the appointment of Muhammad Babangida as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) by President Bola Tinubu as a strategic step that will bolster the administration’s agricultural reform agenda.

In a statement personally signed, Senator Musa, who represents Niger East Senatorial District, congratulated Babangida and commended President Tinubu for placing the right individual at the helm of a key institution critical to Nigeria’s food security and rural development.

“The appointment of Muhammad Babangida as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture is not only timely but visionary. It reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to revitalizing our agricultural sector through capable leadership and targeted institutional reform,” the senator stated.

According to Senator Musa, Babangida brings to the role a strong blend of academic excellence and corporate experience that aligns perfectly with the mandate of the Bank of Agriculture. He noted that the new chairman holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s in Public Relations and Business Communication from the European University in Montreux, Switzerland, in addition to having completed the Executive Program on Corporate Governance at Harvard Business School in 2002.

The lawmaker emphasized that Babangida’s leadership comes at a time when the Bank is being repositioned to become a central pillar in Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda—particularly in areas of agribusiness financing, rural industrialization, and economic empowerment of farmers and smallholder enterprises.

“His background and pedigree make him well-suited to steer the BOA toward greater efficiency, innovation, and transparency. I have no doubt that his appointment will drive bold reforms, improve credit access for farmers, and energize the rural economy,” Senator Musa added.

He further noted that the Bank of Agriculture must now be seen not merely as a lending institution, but as a development engine that powers sustainable growth in the country’s agro-economy.

The senator called on stakeholders in the agriculture and finance sectors to support the new BOA chairman in executing his mandate, stating that national food security and economic resilience depend on the success of agricultural reform efforts.

“We join well-meaning Nigerians across all sectors in celebrating this well-deserved appointment and wish Muhammad Babangida every success in his new national assignment,” Senator Musa concluded.

The appointment of Babangida is already generating optimism in policy and business circles, with expectations that the Bank will adopt modern governance practices, enhance credit delivery mechanisms, and foster greater private sector collaboration to stimulate agrarian transformation in line with President Tinubu’s vision.
