President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has cautioned Nigerians against divisive politics and what he described as false messianic narratives as the country gradually moves towards the 2027 general elections, assuring that the National Assembly will remain steadfast in safeguarding democratic stability and national unity.
Akpabio, in his New Year message to Nigerians, declared that 2026 would usher in renewed hope and steady national progress, driven by strong institutions, responsible leadership and collective resolve rather than individual ambitions.
The message, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, praised Nigerians for their resilience, patience and civic maturity despite prevailing economic and security challenges.
According to him, sustainable development can only be achieved when democratic institutions function effectively, and leaders remain accountable to the people.
“As we enter the year 2026, I extend my warm wishes to Nigerians for a peaceful and fulfilling year. I commend the resilience, patience and civic maturity of our people, even in challenging times,” Akpabio said.
He stressed that while the Executive continues to roll out policies and reforms, the National Assembly remains firmly committed to its constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking, representation and oversight to ensure that governance delivers tangible benefits to citizens.
“The Senate and the entire National Assembly will continue to discharge their duties with diligence, providing legislative support where necessary, exercising oversight where required, and always acting in the best interest of national unity, economic stability and social justice,” he stated.
Akpabio expressed cautious optimism that ongoing efforts to address insecurity, economic pressures, infrastructure gaps and youth unemployment would produce more concrete results in the coming year.
He said, “Our democracy is strengthened when institutions function correctly, and leaders remain accountable.
“The National Assembly will continue to work to strengthen these institutions and ensure that public policy is people-centred and forward-looking,” he said.
Looking ahead to increased political activities as 2027 approaches, the Senate President warned Nigerians to be vigilant against divisive rhetoric and self-styled saviours.
“As political activities intensify, Nigerians must remain discerning. History has shown that those who present themselves as sole rescuers often deepen division rather than heal it,” he cautioned.
According to him, democracy thrives on ideas, responsibility and respect for national unity, not on inflammatory rhetoric or deception.
He urged political actors to conduct themselves with restraint and a strong sense of national responsibility, assuring that the Senate would continue to uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline and the rule of law.
Akpabio added that the National Assembly remains committed to constructive engagement with the Executive, the Judiciary and other stakeholders in the task of nation-building.
“The National Assembly will continue to work with all arms of government, and stakeholders to build a more united, just and prosperous Nigeria, where leadership is defined by service and institutions outlive individuals,” he said.
He called on Nigerians to remain engaged, vigilant and hopeful in the year ahead, while pledging the Senate’s unwavering support for democratic governance.
“On behalf of my family, my constituents, the Senate and the entire National Assembly, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful celebration and a prosperous 2026,” Akpabio added.
