German Constitutional Court rules climate protection law insufficient

Germany’s climate protection law is not extensive enough, the Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday.
The government has until the end of 2022 to refine the goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions after 2030, the judges in Karlsruhe ruled.
The ruling marks a partial success for several environmental activists and organisations which had sued the German government to implement more precise measures to fight climate change.

The judges said the insufficiencies of the climate law violated the rights of the plaintiffs and many of whom are very young.
“The regulations defer the high burden of reducing emissions irrevocably to the time after 2030,’’ the judges said.
