Senate stops construction of World Bank supported pit toilets in Abuja

By Ben Adoga
The Senate yesterday stopped further constructions of public pit toilets going on in some parts of the federal capital territory, FCT, for failing to meet international standards.

The project was initiated to end the open dedication in Nigeria, especially Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The project is supported with counterpart funding through a tripartite arrangement between the World Bank, Federal Government if Nigeria and the FCT Administration.

Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, chaired by Senator Smart Adeyemi, (Kogi West) opened up during the FCT budget defence before the Committee. He ordered the Director of Development Control, Muktar Galadima to investigate the genuineness of the approval of land for such construction.

While faulting the design of the public toilets, Senator Adeyemi said any project that was not approved by the National Assembly was illegal, saying the international convention that might ratify the construction of public toilets is usurping the constitutional duties of the National Assembly and that no project or construction should be in conflict with the Abuja Master Plan.

He complained that the design of the pit toilets was obsolete and was not linked to the city’s central sewage system, was not environmentally friendly and infractions were found in their locations.

He maintained that the FCT Department of Development Control should stop those projects and insisted: “We should not make a monster of personality at the expense of people and dwindling resources.”
